Payer/Insurance for Organ Transplants: Medicare

Medicare is available to people who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States and who are:

  • Age 65 or older
  • Disabled (Medicare usually begins after two years of disability)
  • Have permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant (End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD))
  • Medicare Hospital Insurance Covers (Part A):

    • Inpatient hospital services
    • Kidney, kidney-pancreas and pancreas-after-kidney transplants
    • Heart, lung, liver, heart-lung, pancreas, and intestinal transplants, if the patient already has Medicare due to age or disability
    • Medicare Medical Insurance Covers (Part B):

      • Physician Services
      • Outpatient Hospital Services
      • Effective as of December 21, 2000, part of the cost of anti-rejection drugs for the life of the transplanted organ is if a patient transplant was covered by Medicare and if they are:1) Age 65 or Older or 2) Disabled according to Medicare for reasons other than ESRD
