Physician Services
Patients
in need of organ transplants are referred to
hospital transplantation centers. General referrals
are made through physicians specializing in
end-organ disease such as Nephrologist,
Gastroenterologists, Cardiologists, or Pulmonologist
(for more information, click
here).
Physician costs that can be included in the Medicare cost report-Organ Acquisition Cost Center include the following:
- All donor and recipient pre-admission physician transplant evaluation services
- Laboratory service such as tissue typing
- The surgeon's professional fees for excision of an organ from a cadaver
- Pre-Admission laboratory and electroencephalography services
- Costs associated with acquiring organs for transplant (cadaver donor and living donor)
- Services of residents and interns not in an approved teaching program
- An appointed medical director supervises each specific organ transplant program. The physician or surgeon is responsible for planning, organizing, conducting and directing the transplant center.
- Hospital physician transplant services
- Post-Transplant services for the recipient
- Medical evaluations occurring during the same inpatient stay as the transplant
- Excision of an organ from a live donor
- Postoperative physician services for the live donor
However, some physician costs can't be included in the Medicare cost report organ acquisition costs. Some reference physician services can be billed under the Medicare Part B physician fee schedule (click here for fee schedule). Some of the reference services cost includes the following:
