Payer/Insurance for Organ Transplants: Medicaid
Medicaid is a health insurance program for low-income patients without health insurance. Individual states decide which residents are eligible for Medicaid. In addition, states determine what benefits and services are covered (not all states cover organ transplants), and establish payment rates.
Medicaid is funded by an established variable matching percentage between a state and federal partnership. However, it should be noted that each state establishes its own funding requirements for organ transplantation.
Some state Medicaid programs will not cover an organ transplant if the patient uses a transplant center outside of a particular state (unless there are no centers in the patient's home state that specifically provide an organ type).
